Acer Gemstone Blue Aspire 8920G

In the final installment of our report on the Acer Gemstone Blue laptop we take a detailed look specifically at the Aspire 8920G in an effort to show how it differs from the Aspire 6920G in our previous Acer laptop review.

The Acer Gemstone Blue model Aspire 8920G comes with it’s own set of nifty multimedia software and handy applications such as AcerArcade Deluxe, Acer HomeMedia, Cinema, Music, Album, Acer InstantOn Arcade, Acer Crystal Eye, Acer Bio-Protection, Acer Launch Manager, Acer GridVista, and Acer GameZone just to mention a few of the pre-installed apps.

This is one of the blue colored laptops which are powered by the Intel Core 2 Duo Processor with support for Intel 64 architecture, and Centrino Technology along with the Mobile Intel PM965 Express Chipset. Ultimately this combination effectively means that this is a nicely responsive laptop computer even under heavy multi-tasking usage.

The factory option of 1 or 2 hard disk drives, up to 320 GB each, comes with a choice of Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate or Windows Vista Home Premium each with the latest Service Pack.

Additional storage features include a choice between a 2x Blu-ray Disc Super Multi dual-layer drive or an 8x DVD-Super Multi dual-layer drive.

Included is a 6-in-1 card reader supporting Secure Digital, MultiMediaCard, MultiMediaCard Plus, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, and XD-Picture Cards as well which we found to be awesome as far as overall versatility goes.

The Acer Gemstone Blue laptop model Aspire 8920G we reviewed had 4GB of DDR2 667MHz memory. Isn’t 4GB of memory in a personal laptop computer great! The wireless laptop networking connection is supplied by what appeared to be a very reliable Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN.

Looking at the laptop graphics we did find once again a nice choice being offered. The NVIDIA GeForce 9650 GS with up to 1280 MB of TurboCache (512MB of dedicated GDDR3 VRAM, and up to 768MB of shared system memory) and the NVIDIA PureVideo HD technology, OpenEXR High Dynamic-Range (HDR) technology, Shader Model 4.0, with Microsoft DirectX 10 support.

The screen size of the Aspire 8920G is larger then that of the Aspire 6920G; it is available in a whopping 18.4″ Full HD Screen with a native resolution of 1920 x 1080. High-brightness and the Acer CineCrystal TFT LCD with multiple lamps and 8ms high-def response time along with a 16:9 aspect ratio round out the impressive graphics features offered exclusively on the Aspire 8920G.

Staying with the spirit of the Gemstone Blue colored laptops, there is a highly impressive attention to audio cpaability which is perfect for those wondering how to record on a laptop right out of the box, and achieve crystal clear powerful recording results.

True 5.1-channel surround sound, High-Def audio support, S/PDIF support for digital speakers, and Acer Pure Zone technology with two built-in stereo microphones featuring beam forming echo cancellation and noise suppression technologies only begin to scratch the surface when trying to simply picture how good it sounds.

In a multimedia environment this laptop gets right down to business. We found the Optimized 2nd Generation Dolby Home Theater audio enhancement featuring Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Live, Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Headphone and Dolby Natural Bass and Dolby Sound Space Expander technologies sounded awesome as we watched DVD movies through the HDMI port going into a huge plasma TV.

Of course this is a laptop computer, and to go along with a mobile lifestyle is the Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN (dual-band quad-mode 802a/b/g/Draft-N) and Bluetooth 2.0+ Enhanced Data Rate WPAN (Wireless Personal Area Network) for those on the move.
